The Zoological Society of Nigeria (ZSN) was founded in 2002 with the objectives of promoting, facilitating and encouraging
Zoological research in Nigeria. Its mission is to document information of Zoological interest and to facilitate scientific
exchange among governmental and non-governmental agencies and individuals involved in Zoological research such as Ecology,
Biodiversity, Conservation, Hydrobiology and Fisheries, Physiology, Genetics, Entomology and Parasitology, Bioinformatics,
Taxonomy, Ethnozoology, Behaviour and Environmental Biology. It also provides consultancy services in various fields of
life sciences.

ZONAL BRANCHES
There are 6 zonal branches and a Coordinator is appointed for each zonal branch. The branch coordinators hold office for
4 years and can be reappointed only once for 2 years.
STATUS (March 2017)
- Name
The official name of the society shall be Zoological Society of Nigeria and the abbreviation ZSN
- Aim
The aim of ZSN shall be to promote Zoology and its applications.
- Activities
- Annual conferences consisting of lectures, workshops, discussions, excursions and other scientific interactions.
- Publication of journal based on conference lectures and other materials
- Meetings of zones, symposia and committees
- Affiliation to other organizations of similar interests
- Consultancy services to government, non-governmental organizations and individuals
- Membership and dues
There shall be four categories of membership- Member, Associate member, Corporate member and Life member
- Members are graduates of Zoology, Biology and allied disciplines, shall pay full dues and shall be entitled to all the
privileges of membership.
- Associate members are spouses of members, students, and other special persons, which shall be approved by the Council.
They shall enjoy all the privileges of membership but can neither vote nor be voted for.
- Corporate Members are Institutions and other bodies approved by council and this category of membership shall pay full
dues and shall enjoy all privileges of membership except voting rights.
- Life Members are individuals that are not less than 40 years and make major financial contribution to ZSN. The minimum
contribution shall be N50,000.00.
- Fiscal Year
The fiscal year shall begin on January 1 and end on December 31.
- Patrons
The society shall at her annual meeting appoint by election Patrons. Patronage shall be tied to certain public
positions and not individuals. A patron shall enjoy such privileges of membership as may be stipulated in the instrument
appointing him or her as patron of ZSN for the stipulated time. Patrons shall among other things take action that shall
further the aims of the society. Patrons shall perform such functions as may be defined by the Council from time to time.
- Governance
- The Governing council shall consist of the President, two Vice Presidents, the Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer,
Editor-in-Chief of the Journal, Secretary to the Editorial board and the Ex-officio members.
- Nominations for members of Governing council shall be made on prescribed forms and shall be duly proposed and seconded
by financial members who must have obtained the expressed consent of the nominee who must himself or herself be a financial
member.
- Nomination papers shall reach the Secretary at least six weeks before the Annual Business Meeting. The Secretary shall
send out a list of persons nominated to hold offices to each financial member 30 days to the Annual business meeting
of the Society.
- Notwithstanding the provision in (c) above, the council may nominate candidates for elections on the eve of the election.
- All elections shall take place at the Annual Business Meeting where voting, organized by a duly elected returning officer
shall be by secret ballot.
- All officers shall hold office for a period of 2 years and are eligible for reelection for one term only.
- The Council shall have powers to co-opt and form sub-committees, which may include co-opted members.
- The President shall preside at all meetings and regulate all the debates of the Society and the Council. He shall summon
all meetings, including council meetings through the Secretary or the Assistant Secretary. He shall see to the proper
interpretation of the Constitution.
- In the absence of the President, The First Vice Presidents shall deputize for him. In the absence of both , the Second
Vice President shall deputize for the President.
- The Secretary shall be responsible for the general conduct of the Society's correspondence except that which relates
to finance. The Secretary or the Assistant shall take and read the minutes, orders and entries of the preceding meeting.
He shall be responsible for drawing the Agenda for meetings in consultation with the President.
- The Treasurer shall keep all financial records of the society. It shall be the duty of the Treasurer to receive all
sums of money due or payable to the Society, and shall pay with approval of the council all sums of money due from
or payable by the Society. He shall be a signatory to all accounts of the Society and shall collect all monies of the
Society and pay same into the bank account of the society within 72 hours of receipt.
- The Publicity Secretary shall be responsible for publishing the Society's Newsletter and take charge of publicity.
- Annual General Meetings
- Conferences for the presentation and discussion of papers and Business Meetings shall hold annually.
- The Secretary shall send written notice to every member of the Society specifying the date, place and time of Annual
Business meeting. Such written notices shall be dispatched at least six calendar months with a reminder in the next
three months before the date of the meeting.
- Items to be included on the Agenda of the Annual Business Meeting of the Society must reach the Secretary at least
a month before the date of the meeting.
- Additional Scientific Meetings for the discussion of papers may be held at the discretion of the Council.
- Council Meetings shall hold at least twice in a year but as often as convenient on the advice of the President.
- QUORUM
- One-fifth of the financial members or 15 of such members (whichever is less) shall form a quorum for the Annual Business
Meetings
- Four members of the Council shall form a quorum for Council Meeting.
- Amendments
Any amendment to the constitution shall only be by a written motion submitted to the Secretary not later than
two months before the Annual Business Meeting, such a motion duly seconded shall require a two-third majority of financial
members present and voting.
